15 in 30: Top Eats in Pittsburgh, Month 2

wpid-img_20150727_110023353_hdr.jpgWelp, I’m home. Hartford hasn’t changed a bit, but there’s something to be said about being alone and in a real bed again. I’d like to thank Intex and Xanax for keeping me sane and asleep this summer. You’re the real heroes! And without further ado, the last fifteen favorites on the last leg of my summer in Pittsburgh. 15 in 30: Top Eats in Pittsburgh, Month 1

It’s been a fast month here in the Steel City- too fast! I’ve been acclimating to work, commuting like I casually memorized the bus schedule, and have been writing bench briefs like it ain’t no thang. It is a thang! And it’s hard! I’ve also been casually eating my way through the city, enjoying the most of each neighborhood. wpid-img_20150626_200613061_hdr.jpgI’ve spent the most time in Lawrenceville in the last two weeks, overshadowed only by Squirrel Hill, my own neighborhood, and Shadyside. In that time, I’ve had amazing treats, from homemade pierogies to beautiful burgers to macarons that taste like they’re straight out of Paris. Continuing my on-the-road tradition from last year, albeit souped up (disclaimer: this article contains no soup), here’s my Top 15 in 30. Continue reading “15 in 30: Top Eats in Pittsburgh, Month 1”

JFK to GDL Sandwich

I know, I know, I’m pretty damned lucky. But really, there’s no reason to be jealous. While the rest of you sit in your temperate, average weather zones, I’ll be in an exotic polar vortex, or Storm Juno as the Weather Channel insists on trending. Don’t malign me for my fortune, for my charmed interactions with the kind people of West Hartford as I traverse Whole Foods, wincing as every clementine and free-range maple syrup candy is decimated from the shelves.DSC_1706 Continue reading “JFK to GDL Sandwich”

McDonald’s Jalapeno Double

Praise the test market lords and demigods of saturated fat, we have a new burger! The Jalapeno Double features two beef patties, white cheddar cheese, jalapeno aioli, and both pickled and crispy jalapenos. I’ll give it to you in stock terms: buy now, and buy long. This burger is impeccable. I was nervous that the loss of the onions, pickles, ketchup, and mustard would take away some of the acidity and balance that the classic McDouble is known for, but thankfully, McDonald’s mitigated the acidity gracefully in this one.DSC_8702 Continue reading “McDonald’s Jalapeno Double”

Wendy’s Spicy Chipotle Jr. Cheeseburger

I hate Christmas shopping. Even though I’ve whittled down all but 20% of it to online shopping, leaving my neighbors constantly curious as to whether I’m in a drug cartel or the Make A Wish Foundation, it’s still an irksome chore. The expectations are too high. What do I want for Christmas? I want to feel genuine satisfaction, the kind that comes from inner peace and self-acceptance. So the Cinzia Rocca jacket and tub of popcorn isn’t going to cut it. But I bought gifts for people, anyway, braving the crowds of the BLEEP for the privilege of elbowing a pinch-faced woman in the chin for the last BLEEP on the shelf and waiting in line, only to make small talk with the cashier about specials on BLEEP. I forgot my mother reads this blog. Well, Mom, enjoy your BLEEP this year.DSC_7203 - Edited Continue reading “Wendy’s Spicy Chipotle Jr. Cheeseburger”
